Call to pause development
A GREEN group wants a moratorium on large-scale coastal developments in Queensland until the effects of the recent floods on dugong habitats are known. The Queensland Government this week approved a $ 950 million tourism and residential development on Hummock Hill Island, about 30km southeast of Gladstone. The island is home to endangered nesting turtles, dugongs and birds. ‘‘ This approval comes at a time when marine environments up and down the Queensland coast have been decimated by the recent floods,’’ Nick Heath from the conservation group WWF said.
