Man charged over killing

A MEL­BOURNE man charged with killing his girl­friend who was stabbed and set on fire at a ser­vice sta­tion may ar­gue di­min­ished re­spon­si­bil­ity due to men­tal im­pair­ment. Ni­cole Joy Read, 42, suf­fered hor­rific burns af­ter she was stabbed and set alight on June 1 last year. David Hop­kins, 40, was charged with mur­der but yes­ter­day his lawyer Sam Nor­ton told the Mel­bourne Mag­is­trates Court the is­sue in the case was whether a men­tal im­pair­ment de­fence could be made. The case was ad­journed un­til Tues­day.
