Funds injection will drive city economy
DISASTER relief funding will pay for $ 600 million worth of road repairs in N o r t h a n d F a r N o r t h Queensland creating 6500 jobs over the next two to three years.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the funding came on top of that already dedicated to projects like the Ring Rd duplication and Port Access Rd.
He said workshops would be held in Townsville and Cairns this month to tell companies how they can become involved.
‘‘ We can’t do this work wi t h o u t c o mpa n i e s a n d workers in NQ and FNQ – they will not miss out on these projects,’’ Mr Wallace said.
‘‘ I need as many local companies and workers as possible to join the repair job from backhoe operators to big consortia.
‘‘ Some of these businesses have been doing it tough so this is an important injection for the economy.
‘‘ As well as repair work with Main Roads, there will be plenty of work on council road projects and on existing hoped it would not take the f o c us a way f r o m muchneeded upgrades to the road network.
‘‘ Anything that creates jobs for the city’s people should be met with applause and we throw our weight behind that kind of concept,’’ he said.
‘‘ What I’m most keen to ensure however, is that this money on repairs does not further delay the city building infrastructure we need in regards to roads from being completed.
‘‘ The community should demand these two projects should be treated separately so the repair work gets the extra resources as needed but we need the work on congested intersections delivered.
‘‘ I’m talking about Dalrymple Rd and Banfield Dr, Woolcock and Mather Sts, Mervyn Crossman Dr, Stuart Dr and all those key intersections which are still needed desperately as well as the rebuilding process to bring us back to where we were.’’
Competitive tenders will be called for up to 80 different projects.
C o m p a n i e s m u s t b e prequalified to take part in the repair effort.
Workshops will be held in Cairns on March 15 and Townsville on March 16 For details, call 4040 6339.
