Apps said he wanted The Straits to generate a s m u c h , o r m o r e interest as the Torres St r a i t - f i l med Remote Area Nurse did when it screened in 2006.

‘‘ We really hope this n e w s e r i e s c r e a t e s opportunities for other Torres Strait Islanders to . . . enter a life of acting,’’ he said.

They chose Townsville as one of their four casting l ocations be- AUDITION NOW: Actor Aaron Fa’aoso with casting consultant Greg Apps who is looking for actors cause there was a large number of Torres Strait Islanders living here.’’

Apps said The Straits would be viewed as a m a j o r A u s t r a l i a n drama, rather than just a North Queensland drama.

‘‘ The nature of the series is if someone is fantastic at auditions, there’s room for them in the series. I want to encourage people with talent because it’s a rare commodity,’’ he said.

There are more than 80 speaking roles on offer including five leads and 15 supporting roles.

Filming is expected to start in May for up to 16 weeks and the show will air next year on the ABC.

‘‘ I’ve appeared in a few T o w n s v i l l e L i t t l e Theatre plays where I’ve had to act big to get all my lines out there but television is a little different. I was told I was over-acting so hopefully I didn’t muck it up too much,’’ he said.

The 60-year-old hoped to hear in four weeks.
