States will keep their school fund­ing role

THE Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment will not move to cut out the states and take c o n t r o l o f e d u c a t i o n f und­ing, Sc hool Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Peter Gar­rett says.

Si nce un­veil i ng t he sec­ond ver­sion of La­bor’s My School web­site on Fri­day, Mr Gar­rett has b e e n i n u n d a t e d wi t h ques­tions about the fu­ture of school fund­ing in Aus­tralia.

That’s be­cause ev­ery school’s 2009 re­cur­rent in­come and cap­i­tal ex- pen­di­ture have been dis­played in a com­par­a­tive for­mat for the first time, al­low­ing the com­mu­nity to see how much each has in the bank.

Mr Gar­rett was tightlipped on the ques­tion of w h e t h e r a u n i f o r m school fund­ing sys­tem s houl d e v e nt ual l y b e brought in, pre­fer­ring in­stead to wait for a fund­ing re­view. ‘‘ It’s bet­ter f or us t o deli ver r es­ources and fund­ing sup­port in the most efficient way we can,’’ he said.
