Flood saviours recog­nised

HE­LI­COPTER crews who plucked dozens of peo­ple from roofs, cars and trees a f t e r t h e ‘ ‘ i n l a n d t s u n a m i ’ ’ s t r u c k Gran­tham in south­east Queens­land have been recog­nised with an in­ter­na­tional ‘‘ Res­cue of the Year’’ award.

The a ward was a nnounced at a he­li­copter res­cue con­fer­ence in Or­lando, Florida.

Emerg e n c y Man­age - ment Queens­land ( EMQ) he­li­copter crews saved 43 lives as they op­er­ated in foul weather af­ter the torr ent s wept down t he Lock­yer Val­ley on Jan­uary 10, sweep­ing all be­fore it.

T h o s e who manned EMQ Res­cue 500 and Res­cue 510 edged out other res­cuers from around the world, in­clud­ing he­li­copter crews who went in un­der fire to evac­u­ate the wounded in Afghanistan.

EMQ pilot Peter Row, who is at the con­fer­ence, said he was to­tally sur­prised by the award.

Mr Row pi­loted Res­cue 510, which hap­pened to be in Bris­bane as the t r a g e d y u n f o l d e d i n Gran­tham.
