Docs probed on narcotics

Townsville Bulletin - - Inside Today -

THE Federal Government is clamping down on doctors who mis-prescribe narcotic drugs, including OxyContin.

Fifty GPs are under investigation by Medicare, which h a s i d e n t i f i e d t h e m a s prescribing high levels of addictive pain killers.

The group has written about 2500 prescriptions for narcotic drugs, including benzodiazepine, over t he past 12 months, Medicare claims.

And a majority of the prescriptions have been written for younger patients, unlikely to require the strong drugs for pain management.

Human Services Minister Tanya Plibersek warned doctors caught doing the wrong thing would face sanctions.

The Professional Services Review could be called in, she said.
