Coin could save US $ 5.5b

RE­PLAC­ING the one-dol­lar note with a coin could save the United States ap­prox­i­mately $ 5.5 bil­lion over the next 30 years, ac­cord­ing to a re­port re­leased Fri­day by the Gov­ern­ment Accountability Of­fice ( GAO). The swap would be ex­pen­sive over the first four years due to the up­front costs of in­creas­ing coin pro­duc­tion dur­ing the tran­si­tion. But a net ben­e­fit would fol­low in the re­main­ing years, the GAO’s anal­y­sis shows.
