RSL fury over US war education centre

Townsville Bulletin - - National Snapshot -

THE RSL has accused the government of insensitivity and ineptitude for sidelining it from plans to contribute to a Vietnam War education centre in Washington.

The RSL national executive said it only learnt of the centre from media reports yesterday.

‘‘ The RSL membership includes tens of thousands of Vietnam veterans who have every right to be consulted about such a significant commemorative event,’’ a RSL statement said.

‘‘ Almost all members of the national executive are Vietnam veterans and we, along with the thousands of our members who fought in that war, resent this exclusion.

‘‘ The government’s handling of this matter has been insensitive and inept.’’

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon and three veterans are in Washington for today’s launch of the centre which will feature a state-of-the-art exhibition to educate visitors about the Vietnam War.
