Whiz kids set to stir up the kitchen
WE last saw dynamic French chef Laurent Vancam in Townsville mid last year on his Queensland School Lunches Tour, teaching families and school tuckshop organisers how to cook tasty, healthy and cheap lunches for school students.
Now we can see him every week day afternoon on our TV screens, as one of the fun and engaging team of chefs on new kids’ cooking show, Kitchen Whiz.
Known to his many fans as Chef Laurent, the Sunshine Coast-based father of two was thrilled to be part of the new series, which is building on the continuing wave of interest by Australian families in cooking.
The new Channel Nine show, hosted by Beau Walker ( The Shak), premiered several weeks ago and has already won over young fans with its fast-paced, fun, game show format.
The new series focuses on the world of food, cooking, and food science, where, over four frenzied rounds, two teams of contestants aged between eight and 12 answer foodie questions and compete in funny, messy, tactile tasks, earning points and taking home great prizes.
Working silently and with stealth, the comedic ‘‘ Kitchen Ninja’’ ( played by Andy Minh Trieu, star of Rescue Special Ops, Rake, Tomorrow When The War Began) undertakes any dangerous tasks on behalf of the young contestants, such as chopping, dealing with naked flames and the hot stove as well as being the final word with the judging.
The final mix in the Kitchen Whiz recipe are appearances by celebrity chefs, including Tom Kime, Sabrina Parrini, Alvin Quah, Anthony Georgiou and Chef Laurent, who cook up dishes that the contestants need to replicate in each episode.
Laurent has already filmed more than a dozen appearances for the series of his three-minute cooking segments, teaching the young contestants the art of creating dishes such as a train birthday cake, Thai beef crispy tartlets and rice paper rolls, and can next be seen tomorrow afternoon, Friday and next Wednesday, introducing dishes such as mini-toast canapes, sushi, chocolate profiteroles and nachos.
