Peo­ple power the win­ner

TOWNSVILLE City Coun­cil Watch Group has la­belled yes­ter­day’s de­ci­sion as a win for the Townsville peo­ple who have ral­lied tire­lessly for change.

The group formed shortly af­ter a suc­cess­ful grass­roots cam­paign by which ratepay­ers ral­lied to over­turn the de­ci­sion.

Group mem­ber Jonathan Me­hi­gan said the de­ci­sion was proof that peo­ple power s t o o d s t r o n g i n N o r t h Queens­land.

‘‘ The voice from the peo­ple of Townsville has fi­nally been heard, and comes as a ma­jor back­down from the coun­cil on this is­sue,’’ he said.

‘ ‘ T h i s i s what c a n b e achieved when peo­ple get be­hind one an­other and call those who are re­spon­si­ble for bad poli­cies to ac­count by means of pub­lic pres­sure.

‘‘ I be­lieve it is now an op­por­tu­nity for the coun­cil to in­vite pub­lic dis­cus­sion and c o n s u l t a t i o n i n r e g a r d s to fu­ture bud­get con­sid­er­a­tions.’’
