Car­bon tax tipped to hit North hard

H I N C H I N B R O O K M P Andrew Cripps has ac­cused Premier Anna Bligh of not un­der­stand­ing the im­pact of a c a r b o n t a x o n Nor t h Queens­land.

Mr Cr i p p s s a i d Nor t h Queens­lan­ders would pay higher prices for elec­tric­ity, fuel and food when the fed­eral gov­ern­ment’s car­bon tax was in­tro­duced from July next year.

Mr Cripps asked Ms Bligh in ques­tion time yes­ter­day what she was do­ing to de­fend Nor t h Quee n s l a n d f r o m La­bor’s car­bon tax.

‘‘ North Queens­land fam­i­lies’ bud­gets are al­ready un­der strain from ris­ing costs caused by the eco­nomic in­com­pe­tence of this long-term Bligh La­bor gov­ern­ment,’’ Mr Cripps said.

‘‘ If Anna Bligh was lis­ten­ing dur­ing her vis­its to North Queens­land she would know that peo­ple place ( enor­mous) re­liance on elec­tric­ity for such things as air­con­di­tion­ing, re­frig­er­a­tion.

‘‘ A car­bon tax will drive up the price of es­sen­tial goods and ser­vices and have an enor­mous im­pact on the cost of liv­ing in North Queens­land.’’
