New flood heights for Bris­bane

NEW homes and de­vel­op­ments in Bris­bane could soon be built to new height spec­i­fi­ca­tions fol­low­ing the dev­as­tat­ing Jan­uary 13 flood­ing of the city. Bris­bane City Coun­cil an­nounced yes­ter­day it wants to raise the de­fined flood level of 3.7 me­tres plus 50cm for hab­it­able floor lev­els un­til a Royal Com­mis­sion into the floods clar­i­fies the is­sue. Un­der the coun­cil’s pro- posal, new de­vel­op­ments in ar­eas af­fected by floods would have to build floor­ing 50cm above the level flood­wa­ters reached. The re­quire­ment would be re­viewed when the Com­mis­sion of In­quiry is fi­nalised. The coun­cil is ex­pected to vote on the new level within weeks and the pol­icy would have to be signed off by the state. . About 5700 hectares of land were af­fected by the Jan­uary flood.
