New flood heights for Brisbane
NEW homes and developments in Brisbane could soon be built to new height specifications following the devastating January 13 flooding of the city. Brisbane City Council announced yesterday it wants to raise the defined flood level of 3.7 metres plus 50cm for habitable floor levels until a Royal Commission into the floods clarifies the issue. Under the council’s pro- posal, new developments in areas affected by floods would have to build flooring 50cm above the level floodwaters reached. The requirement would be reviewed when the Commission of Inquiry is finalised. The council is expected to vote on the new level within weeks and the policy would have to be signed off by the state. . About 5700 hectares of land were affected by the January flood.
