Mateparae named NZ G- G

FOR­MER De­fence Force head Jerry Mateparae, pic­tured, has been named New Zealand’s next Gov­er­nor-Gen­eral.

Lieu­tenant Gen­eral Mateparae will be sworn in on Au­gust 31, af­ter Sir Anand Satyanand’s five-year term ends on Au­gust 23. Prime Min­is­ter John Key said Lt Gen Mateparae, who is cur­rently the di­rec­tor of the Gov­ern­ment Com- mu­ni­ca­tions Se­cu­rity Bu­reau, was a highly re­garded leader.

‘‘ He joined the New Zealand Ar my in 1972, and rose through the ranks, serv­ing and com­mand­ing in a wide va­ri­ety of roles,’’ Mr Key said.

‘‘ This cul­mi­nated in his ap­point­ment as Chief of De­fence Force in 2006. Jerry will be New Zealand’s 20th Gover­norGen­eral.’’

Mr Key said there would be a state farewell for Sir Anand on Au­gust 17.
