FORMER Defence Force head Jerry Mateparae, pictured, has been named New Zealand’s next Governor-General.
Lieutenant General Mateparae will be sworn in on August 31, after Sir Anand Satyanand’s five-year term ends on August 23. Prime Minister John Key said Lt Gen Mateparae, who is currently the director of the Government Com- munications Security Bureau, was a highly regarded leader.
‘‘ He joined the New Zealand Ar my in 1972, and rose through the ranks, serving and commanding in a wide variety of roles,’’ Mr Key said.
‘‘ This culminated in his appointment as Chief of Defence Force in 2006. Jerry will be New Zealand’s 20th GovernorGeneral.’’
Mr Key said there would be a state farewell for Sir Anand on August 17.
