Check your kid­ney health as part of global ini­tia­tive

NORTH Queens­lan­ders are be­ing urged to book a kid­ney health check with their GP as part of W o r l d K i d n e y D a y to­day.

Townsville Health Ser­vice District’s chronic kid­ney disease nurse Anne Blong said peo­ple at risk of kid­ney disease i n c l u d e d t h o s e who: were di­a­betic, were of Abo­rig­i­nal or Tor­res Strait Is­lander de­scent, were smok­ers or over­weight, had high blood pres­sure or a fam­ily his­tory of kid­ney disease.

Ms Blong said this year Kid­ney Health Aus­tralia was ask­ing peo­ple to check up on their kid­ney a n d c a r d i o v a s c u l a r health.

‘‘ A check up with your GP this week is a good idea if you are in a risk group,’’ she said.

Ms Blong said a kid­ney health check f or t he over-50s was also a smart move.

‘‘ A sim­ple blood, urine a n d b l o o d - p r e s s u r e check is all it will take,’’ she said. ‘‘ An ounce of preven­tion is worth a pound of cure or end­ing up on dial­y­sis.’’
