Check your kidney health as part of global initiative
NORTH Queenslanders are being urged to book a kidney health check with their GP as part of W o r l d K i d n e y D a y today.
Townsville Health Service District’s chronic kidney disease nurse Anne Blong said people at risk of kidney disease i n c l u d e d t h o s e who: were diabetic, were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, were smokers or overweight, had high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease.
Ms Blong said this year Kidney Health Australia was asking people to check up on their kidney a n d c a r d i o v a s c u l a r health.
‘‘ A check up with your GP this week is a good idea if you are in a risk group,’’ she said.
Ms Blong said a kidney health check f or t he over-50s was also a smart move.
‘‘ A simple blood, urine a n d b l o o d - p r e s s u r e check is all it will take,’’ she said. ‘‘ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure or ending up on dialysis.’’
