Councils told to clean up act
Q U E E N S L A N D ’ S r e c o n - s t r uction chief has t ol d disaster-hit councils to get on with the clean-up and stop making unreasonable demands for help.
Major-General Mick Slater made the comments amid ongoing debate about the role the army should play in the recovery effort after the floods and Cyclone Yasi.
Some councils, including the Somerset Regional Council, have said they’re struggling with the enormity of the job.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said initial army assistance had been withdrawn and when the council made another request for help, he was told it could only be offered on a contract basis. Somerset taxpayers would have to foot the bill.
But Maj Gen Slater said it was time for councils to tackle the clean-up head on with state and federal government funds received.
