Japan issues tsunami alert
JAPAN issued a tsunami warning yesterday after a 7.2-magnitude quake struck 160 kilometres east off the main Honshu island, swaying buildings in the capital Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. The tremor struck 10km below the sea floor, said the Japan Meteorological Agency, which issued a tsunami warning for Honshu’s Pacific coast, advising of waves which could push far inland. A spokesman from the US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was estimated to be 430km northeast of Tokyo.
