New doc­tors find their feet

The men­tor­ing pro­gram al­lows newer staff mem­bers to join with more ex­pe­ri­enced doc­tors to help them find their feet in their early years.

Ju­nior house of­fi­cer Dr Rachel Collings said the pro­gram was aimed at help­ing doc­tors grow confi- dence and achieve a worklife bal­ance.

‘‘. . . the idea of hav­ing a more ex­pe­ri­enced doc­tor to men­tor just me was the seed for this pro­gram,’’ she said.

The hos­pi­tal’s di­rec­tor of clin­i­cal train­ing Dr Carl O’Kane said the pro­gram was in­for­ma­tive and en­abled the hos­pi­tal to sup­port the ju­nior doc­tors.

Dr O’Kane is re­spon­si­ble for the clin­i­cal train­ing of more than 100 in­terns and res­i­dents. He said ju­nior staff mem­bers at Townsv i l l e Hos­pit a l had t he unique ex­pe­ri­ence of clin­i­cal r ot at i ons, not only across the hos­pi­tal, but also at ru­ral hos­pi­tals and GP surg­eries.

‘‘ This helps young doc­tors get a broader per­spec­tive of their fu­ture op­tions f o r a c a r e e r i n North Queens­land,’’ he said.
