China quake toll ris­ing

THE death toll in an earth­quake that top­pled houses and dam­aged a ho­tel and su­per­mar­ket in China’s ex­treme south­west has risen to 22. More than 200 oth­ers were in­jured.

Wit­nesses re­ported see­ing peo­ple buried un­der de­bris from build­ings dam­aged by the quake near the bor­der with Burma.

The quake hit while many peo­ple, in­clud­ing stu­dents, were home for a cus­tom­ary mid­day rest.

The 5.4-mag­ni­tude quake hit at a depth of 33km.

Many houses col­lapsed in the tremor. Wit­nesses said parts of a su­per­mar­ket and ho­tel also caved in.

The tremor trig­gered power out­ages in Yingjiang county and three af­ter­shocks were reg­is­tered.
