New rolling-stock more powerful, quieter ARG locos on track
QR National’s freight subsidiary ARG has taken delivery of a series of new diesel locomotives which are more powerful, quieter and more efficient.
The locomotives are part of a capital investment program by QR National to support strong growth along its lines, including the north-westcorridorbe-tween Townsville and Mount Isa.
The first two of six of the 4100-class locomotives will begin operating along the corridor in the coming weeks, with the remaining four to be delivered over the next couple of months.
QR National Freights Group general manager, Bulk East, Chris Gregg said the new locomotives were great news for the North’s regional communities.
‘‘ These locos are more productive but at the same time quieter and more efficient than the older locomotives,’’ he said.
‘ ‘ During the past few months we have had to overcome many challenges with this project – not the least of which were floods and cyclones – and the team has worked really well to deliver these new locos.
‘‘ We are committed to investing in new rolling-stock to continually expand our capacity to keep up with customers’ needs to move increasing volumes of freight between producers and port. To bring the new locomotives online a s quickly and as safely as possible, Freight will be using them in tandem along the corridor which means real benefits for our customers in terms of our haulage capabilities into and out of Mount Isa.’’
Mount Is a MP Betty Kiernan said she was happy to see the reinvestment in the region and ARG pos- itioning for future sustainability in the area.
‘‘ We have been working with ARG on behalf of the communities along the corridor to mitigate effects from the freight business operations in terms of noise and these new trains will certainly make a positive difference,’’ she said.
‘‘ These new locomotives demonstrate a tremendous investment and boost for the region. They further strengthen ARG’s commit- ment in the north west for the future.’’
The 4100-class locomotives are manufactured by Downer EDI Rail for QR National under contracts totalling more than $ 376 million.
