Is Armegeddon upon us?

Townsville Bulletin - - Inside Today - by Nick Tabakoff

IS 2011 the year of Armageddon? Now we have the fifth biggest earthquake in history that triggered a killer tsunami that not only has hit Japan, but much of Asia.

And yes, we haven’t even started to learn what the final death and casualty toll and the many billions of dollars of damage could be.

Not even the biblical 10 plagues could match what’s been going on in the world this year. It all started here in Australia with massive killer floods in three states, bushfires in Perth, earthquakes in New Zealand, further killer floods in Brazil: the list goes on.

And that’s just the natural disasters.

Just think about some of the human events.

Already this year we’ve had the governments of Tunisia and Egypt overt h r o wn, a n d t h e f o u r - decade r ule of Colonel M u a m m a r G a d d a f i i n Libya on the brink.

After each major flood, earthquake and revolution, we have thought: ‘‘ This surely has to be it.’’

But the challenges to order as we know it keep coming.

Instead of heading to the pub yesterday afternoon, many of us instead gathered around the nearest TV or computer s creen t o watch the extraordinary footage of huge ships being t ossed around l i ke t oy boats in a bathtub, and b r i d g e s c o l l a p s i ng l i ke children’s blocks.
