JA­PANESE authorities urged 2000 res­i­dents liv­ing by a nu­clear plant in Fukushima to evac­u­ate. Of­fi­cials in Fukushima is­sued the ad­vice for res­i­dents liv­ing within a two-kilo­me­tre ra­dius of the No. 2 re­ac­tor of the Fukushima No. 1 plant, op­er­ated by Tokyo Elec­tric Power Co. Ear­lier, the gov­ern­ment de­clared an atomic power emer­gency but said that no ra­di­a­tion leaks were de­tected among its re­ac­tors. Prime Min­is­ter Naoto Kan said he de­clared the emer­gency to en­able authorities to im­ple­ment emer­gency mea­sures. Kan said ear­lier that no ra­di­a­tion leaks were de­tected from Ja­pan’s nu­clear power sta­tions af­ter the mas­sive quake and tsunami struck.
