MERCEDES-Benz Australia boss Horst von Sanden admits the lack of a compact SUV could cost the brand its status as this country’s leading prestige carmaker. Von Sanden conceded the point at the launch this week of the G-Class, an expensive cult off-roader that has not been released in Australia since the 1980s. Last month Audi outsold Mercedes-Benz for the Despite Audi having no commercial vehicle line- in a growth segment. Benz’s comparable GLK is made only in left hand drive. “ I have never made it a secret that I want the GLK here,” von Sanden says. least three years to the next generation model. “ It drives me crazy.” Asked if this omission would continue to cost the Tristar brand its place at the head of the prestige are very strict.”
