Stylish idea helps Mum fight cancer
FOR Jody Lingard, the feeling was like a fishing line tugging on her chest.
But the reality of a breast cancer diagnosis hit the 37-year-old mother-of-three like a sledgehammer.
Not only did she have a young family to support, but now a raft of medical bills to pay.
That was in January, but since then the Townsville woman has been thrown a lifeline by friend and Rum Jungle Hair Studio owner Donna Wilson, who is donating $ 1 from every haircut to Ms Lingard.
The generous woman had only met Ms Lingard a month before her diagnosis.
‘‘ I knew the family was struggling but I didn’t have money to give to help them,’’ Ms Wilson said. ‘‘ I am donating $ 1 from every haircut until Jody has finished chemotherapy.
‘‘ I saw the fantastic community spirit after Cyclone Yasi and I thought it would be a lot better if we involved the community.’’
While downplaying her own generosity, Ms Wilson’s caring attitude has not been missed by Ms Lingard.
‘‘ I met Donna on a camping trip in December ( but) she has been amazing with what she has done,’’ Ms Lingard said.
‘‘ She’s helped with a lot of little things as well.’’
Ms Lingard had a mastectomy earlier this year and is about to start 18 weeks of chemotherapy.
‘‘ When I was diagnosed I was devastated. I felt very lost,’’ she said
‘‘ I was a grade-three which is the most aggressive.
‘‘ My first thought was my daughter who is only 11 . . . she has taken on my role so she will wake up early in the morning and get the lunches.’’
