US har­bour feels ef­fects

SOME bro­ken docks and de­bris were pulled out of Santa Cruz, Cal­i­for­nia, har­bour on Satur­day morn­ing af­ter a day of tsunami surges caused by the largest earth­quake in Ja­pan’s his­tory. Of­fi­cials have counted 18 sunken ves­sels and many more that con­tinue to take on wa­ter and could sink in the near fu­ture, ac­cord­ing to Lt Renee McKin­non of the Coast Guard. The over­all dam­age to the har­bour is still be­ing cal­cu­lated, though the early as­sess­ment is about $ 17.14 mil­lion, Port Di­rec­tor Lisa Ekers said at a Satur­day morn­ing news con­fer­ence. She said half of a dock was gone and at least 10 have sig­nif­i­cant dam­age.
