Tallis drops in to surprise Gran
TOWNSVILLE grand-mother Delia Macdonald celebrated her 90th birthday in style yesterday with a surprise visit from NRL great Gorden Tallis.
The former rugby league international flew in from Sydney early Sunday to take part in a whirlwind trip to personally wish his grandmother a happy birthday.
Tallis took some time out from commentating for the Fox Sports network to make the brief stopover in his hometown.
Mrs Macdonald said the day was a dream come true.
‘‘ The last thing I heard Gorden was down south so it is a wonderful surprise to have him here with us,’’ she said.
‘‘ It’s a dream come true to see every body together again so I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday.’’
The 90-year-old celebrated her special day with friends and extended family which includes 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
The celebration was held at Centrals Rugby league Club, marking along - standing family affiliation with the club. A grandson and great grandson of Mrs Macdonald have joined Tallis as junior members of the Townsville-based outfit.
Tallis said the celebration was more than just a birth- day party. ‘‘ We have always grown up as a very tightknit family so we know the importance of celebrating these types of occasions,’’ he said.
‘‘ I was only here a couple of months ago to see how she was going because I knew it was going to get busier once the footy season kicked off again.
‘‘ I can’t stay too long because I have to get back for Monday night footy but there are some things you just don’t miss and this is one of them. We’re all very happy to see she has had such a good innings but we’re still hoping she has a few more runs to come.’’
