Townsville Bulletin - - Inside Today -

PRISONERS at Townsville Correctional Centre may think twice about playing up after prison guards took an intense training session yesterday.

A team of seven guards took part in the monthly training session aimed at dealing with problematic offenders.

T h e c e n t r e ’ s g e n e r a l ma n a g e r Andrew Pike said the demonstration was publicised to give the community peace of mind.

There were five escapes at the centre last year.

‘‘ It’s important people see we are a progressive organisation attempting to properly manage prisoners on a day to day basis,’’ Mr Pike said.

He said the group went through training and restraining drills, along with riot tactics and correct baton use.

He said a perfect example of where training came in handy was a situation that occurred two weeks ago.

‘‘ Eight prisoners refused to go back to their cells and we were able to bring the situation under control,’’ he said.
