Diverting funds no solution

Townsville Bulletin - - Voice Of The North -

JOHN Andersen suggests Main Roads should have directed the $ 120m it received to upgrade one of the most dangerous sections of the Bruce Highway, the Cardwell Range, to flood mitigation works to the north and south of Ingham ( Bully, March 12)

Like John and thousands of other North Queenslanders I too share the frustration that 40 years of neglect for the Bruce Highway by Canberra has wreaked on our com-munity, however implying that $ 120m would fix flood problems is wrong.

It would cost more than $ 500m to deliver flood immunity from Ingham to the Cardwell Range. A further $ 200m is needed at Cattle and Frances Creeks, thus we would be short $ 600m.

This shows the magnitude of the problem as we fight for our fair share.

CRAIG WALLACE MP, Minister for Main Roads.
