Sledging spurred on goalkeeper

Townsville Bulletin - - Bizfi Nd -

ROAR goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos has credited the sledging of Mariners rival Daniel McBreen for sparking his penalty shoot-out heroics which clinched Brisbane’s A-League title.

T h e o k l i t o s s a i d t h e ‘‘ chirpy’’ McBreen’s cutting words when Central Coast led 2-0 in extra time backfired as they spurred him on for two clutch saves.

Tellingly, the first, a magnificent diving effort to the left, came with McBreen on the spot when the shoot-out was locked at 2-all at Suncorp Stadium.

Theoklitos made the most of the chance to get in the face of the striker and returned serve with a lengthy verbal spray before his shot.

‘‘ There was a bit of banter during the game and obviously they were 2-0 up in extra time and were quite chirpy,’’ Theoklitos said.

‘‘ When we equalised I let him know about it and obviously he was stepping up to t a k e t h e p e n a l t y a n d I thought there was definitely one person who’s not scoring and that’s Daniel McBreen.

‘‘ So when I did save it I let him know about it as well.’’

After Roar skipper Matt McKay put the home side up 3-2, Theoklitos produced a s e n s a t i o n a l o n e - h a n d e d parry of Pedj Bojic’s lofted attempt to virtually seal the championship.
