ASYLUM seekers were last night protesting on the roof of a Darwin detention centre. Security guards were negotiating with a group of Burmese men at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre. Immigration spokesman Bill Power said the nine detainees turned something minor into something big. He said a detainee became ‘‘ aggressive’’ when he demanded food and didn’t get any. Mr Power said the detainee was taken from the room which caused other detainees to become ‘‘ distressed’’. Mr Power said staff were expected to negotiate with the detainees in an attempt get them off the roof at 8pm.
