Driver, train in near miss

DEER­A­GUN man Doug Vindin had a nar­row es­cape from se­ri­ous in­jury af­ter the ve­hi­cle he was driv­ing al­most skid­ded into the path of an on­com­ing train in Rail­way Es­tate yes­ter­day.

The near-miss hap­pened at the in­ter­sec­tion of Rail­way Ave and Putt St about noon.

Mr Vindin was trapped in his ve­hi­cle, which had been swept side­ways, leav­ing him stuck be­tween the stopped train and the boom gate.

The vis­i­bly shaken driver said he had been trav­el­ling north along Rail­way Ave when he went to turn left to cross the train line.

‘‘ I mis­judged, I thought I had enough time,’’ he said.

‘‘ The lights came on and the boom gate hit the back of the car.’’

The driver of the Queens­land Rail train, which was haul­ing cargo for Ce­ment Aus­tral i a , s t o p p e d a nd po­lice were called.

A po­lice spokes­woman yes­ter­day said authorities were in­ves­ti­gat­ing the in­ci­dent.

The spokes­woman said it was a timely re­minder for mo­torists to obey traf­fic signs around rail­way cross­ings and not take risks.
