Driver, train in near miss
DEERAGUN man Doug Vindin had a narrow escape from serious injury after the vehicle he was driving almost skidded into the path of an oncoming train in Railway Estate yesterday.
The near-miss happened at the intersection of Railway Ave and Putt St about noon.
Mr Vindin was trapped in his vehicle, which had been swept sideways, leaving him stuck between the stopped train and the boom gate.
The visibly shaken driver said he had been travelling north along Railway Ave when he went to turn left to cross the train line.
‘‘ I misjudged, I thought I had enough time,’’ he said.
‘‘ The lights came on and the boom gate hit the back of the car.’’
The driver of the Queensland Rail train, which was hauling cargo for Cement Austral i a , s t o p p e d a nd police were called.
A police spokeswoman yesterday said authorities were investigating the incident.
The spokeswoman said it was a timely reminder for motorists to obey traffic signs around railway crossings and not take risks.
