Recovery chief has ‘ can do’ attitude
THE chief of Queensland’s Reconstruction Authority has offered himself up as a hotline to mayors battling red tape in the disaster recovery.
Chief executive Graeme Newton said he wants to help 72 mayors, reconstructing flood and cyclone-hit regions, to bust through bureaucracy.
At a Local Government Ass o c i a t i o n o f Queensland event in Brisbane yesterday, Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor Pino Giandomenico t old Mr Newton he was pleased with his attitude to problem solving.
‘‘ You’ve put it out there ‘ I’m from the government. I’m here to help and if we can’t help, we’ll work our way around it’. That’s good news for me,’’ he said.
‘‘ What I’m concerned about is sometimes the middle order batsmen seem to not understand that protocol, so if that’s the case, can we all have your mobile number so we can ring you and make sure some assistance can be redirected?’’
Mr Newton said his number was printed on his business cards and he would make them available.
