Re­cov­ery chief has ‘ can do’ attitude

THE chief of Queens­land’s Re­con­struc­tion Au­thor­ity has of­fered him­self up as a hot­line to may­ors bat­tling red tape in the disas­ter re­cov­ery.

Chief ex­ec­u­tive Graeme New­ton said he wants to help 72 may­ors, re­con­struct­ing flood and cy­clone-hit re­gions, to bust through bu­reau­cracy.

At a Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Ass o c i a t i o n o f Queens­land event in Bris­bane yes­ter­day, Hinch­in­brook Shire Coun­cil Mayor Pino Gian­domenico t old Mr New­ton he was pleased with his attitude to prob­lem solv­ing.

‘‘ You’ve put it out there ‘ I’m from the gov­ern­ment. I’m here to help and if we can’t help, we’ll work our way around it’. That’s good news for me,’’ he said.

‘‘ What I’m con­cerned about is some­times the mid­dle or­der bats­men seem to not un­der­stand that pro­to­col, so if that’s the case, can we all have your mo­bile num­ber so we can ring you and make sure some as­sis­tance can be redi­rected?’’

Mr New­ton said his num­ber was printed on his busi­ness cards and he would make them avail­able.
