Flood- proofing needs priority

Townsville Bulletin - - Voice Of The North -

I HOPE that voters will remember which politicians made the statement that the Bruce Highway cannot be flood-proofed 100 per cent.

That means they will not seriously consider flood-proofing the Bruce Highway.

The Bruce Highway is highway number one in Australia. I would like for those bright sparks who boldly proclaim the Bruce Highway cannot be flood-proofed to point out which specific areas cannot be flood-proofed. Such places do not exist.

Consider the technologies available in the 21st century. Such statements come from fools or liars, take your choice.

What we need right now is a fourlane divided highway bridge that is four metres above the existing highway with a railway on the bridge between Toobanna and Burgamoo. That distance is about 3km. We do not have such a bridge because the people of Ingham vote the wrong way as the current government sees things.

With the looming probability that no one will pay to repair the Lucinda Pier, such a new bridge will be very much needed if sugar is grown in the area.

If population growth continues we will need a four lane divided highway all the way between Ingham and Townsville. HARRISON DUNCAN,

Nelly Bay.

DISGRACE: Flood-proofing the Bruce Highway would be an enormous task
