Mining tax would pay for highway
YOUR editorial calling for floodproofing once and for all of the Bruce Highway is well made. Enough is enough That being so every North Queenslander must surely be in favour of a minerals tax to pay for it. We must all be aware that if we have to wait for south-east corner taxpayers to pay, it will never happen.
Obviously we do not have the population to pay for what would be a massive infrastructure cost. What we do have though are mineral deposits that belong to us and for which the world is prepared to pay handsomely.
If we miss this opportunity it may well be gone forever. Using the timetable included in your editorial in 40 years time this wealth which is rightfully ours could be well gone.
Wayne Goss when he was Premier used to say that he would believe something was really needed when the populace marched down George St demanding to pay higher taxes to pay for it. So it is with the Bruce Highway and we should be demanding a greater share of a minerals tax to make it happen. KEN McELLIGOTT, Riverside Gardens.
