Local jumper Hall has eyes firmly set on London Olympics
FRESH from achieving the southern hemisphere’s second best high jump in 2011, Townsville’s Josh Hall now has his sights set on Olympic glory.
The 20-year-old jumping sensation achieved a leap of 2.26m at the recent Victorian Athletics Championships and is primed to go even higher at the Townsville Sports Reserve tomorrow night. It’s hoped Hall will reach the necessary heights required for qualification in the 2012 London Olympics.
But with the Olympics still more than 12 months away Hall has more immediate goals to accomplish, including an Australian title and qualification for the world championships later in the year.
‘‘ I’m trying to back up what I did in Melbourne and it’s a chance to get some consistency around my jumping,’’ Hall said.
‘‘ Basically in Melbourne I was jumping but technically it wasn’t great so we’re just trying to see if we can perfect that technique.
‘‘ If that fixes up I can even get higher, it’d be amazing to do that.’’
The Australian high jump record is 2.36m and Hall’s impressive 2.36m leap already guarantees him a spot at the World Student Games in August.
North Queensland Athletics development officer Cameron Clayton said tomorrow’s meet will be held specifically for Hall in order to prepare him for a competition diary that includes n a t i o n a l m e e t s i n P e r t h a n d Melbourne-based events.
Clayton said the competition in Melbourne about the middle of May will act as Hall’s qualifier for the world championships, and also a chance to to win the Australian title from south Queensland rival Liam Zamel-Paez.
‘‘ Josh has been in much better form than Liam so far this season so we need to help maintain and develop this form further for him,’’ he said.
Hall’s latest achievements come on the back of a run of disruptions to his preparations earlier in the year, including a torn hip flexor that prevented him from training for about two weeks.
