Fifth C- 17 considered
THE Federal Government will buy another giant heavy transport aircraft to help bolster Australia’s disaster relief capabilities. The Air Force acquired four C-17s under a $ 2 billion deal in 2006, and earlier this month, the government said it was considering a fifth. Defence Minister Stephen Smith confirmed the purchase, noting the assistance the fleet was providing to Christchurch and Japan. The government will also lodge a formal bid in Britain to buy a surplus 16,000-tonne bay class landing ship dock.
