Fifth C- 17 con­sid­ered

THE Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment will buy an­other gi­ant heavy trans­port air­craft to help bol­ster Aus­tralia’s disas­ter re­lief ca­pa­bil­i­ties. The Air Force ac­quired four C-17s un­der a $ 2 bil­lion deal in 2006, and ear­lier this month, the gov­ern­ment said it was con­sid­er­ing a fifth. De­fence Min­is­ter Stephen Smith con­firmed the pur­chase, not­ing the as­sis­tance the fleet was pro­vid­ing to Christchurch and Ja­pan. The gov­ern­ment will also lodge a for­mal bid in Bri­tain to buy a sur­plus 16,000-tonne bay class land­ing ship dock.
