City land needs to be sold as one parcel

Townsville Bulletin - - Inside Today - Tony Raggatt

A MAJOR development site in Townsville’s CBD needs to be retained as a whole so it can be redeveloped and re-energise the city, Deputy Mayor David Crisafulli said yesterday.

Cr Crisafulli was commenting on moves by Townsville’s Lancini Group to divest its 25 per cent interest in the company which holds the parcel and was to be the vehicle for a $ 200 million entertainment and retail project called Flinders Plaza. The major shareholder is a subsidiary of embattled retail group Austexx.

‘‘ It’s obviously very disappointing that the local element of the project will no longer be present,’’ Cr Crisafulli said.

‘‘ However we as a community should acknowledge that what ( Lancini director) Laurence Lancini did in putting together a whole city block is something that will still bear fruit for the city in years to come.

‘‘ It would have been virtually impossible for anybody else to have achieved that.

‘‘ The fact it remains as an entire parcel means the community needs to work doubly hard to make sure that a viable well-respected company purchases that site as a whole and we see a development take place that will reenergise the city.’’
