Red Cross needs helpers

AS the North be­gins to re­build af­ter Cy­clone Yasi and f l oods, Red Cross is call­ing for peo­ple to train as emer­gency ser­vices vol­un­teers.

Red Cross will run comp r e h e n s i v e , o n e - d a y t r a i n i n g s e s s i o n s i n Townsville over the next few weeks to train peo­ple to help in a disas­ter.

Queens­land Emer­gency S e r v i c e s m a n a g e r Carolyn Parsons said pro­vid­ing sup­port duri n g e mer g e n c i e s a n d man­agi n g e v a c u a t i o n cen­tres were two of the most im­por­tant ser­vices pro­vided by Red Cross dur­ing emer­gen­cies.

‘‘ We know from re­cent ex­pe­ri­ence that emer­gen­cies re­quire the ex­per­tise, skills and re­sources of gov­ern­ment and non­govern­ment emer­gency man­age­ment agen­cies in­clud­ing Red Cross to sup­port lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties in pre­par­ing, re­spond­ing and re­cov­er­ing from an emer­gency event,’’ he said.
