Rioters put on notice
IMMIGRATION Minister Chris Bowen has put Christmas Island rioters on notice that they could jeopardise their bid to be resettled in Australia.
A group of 200 asylum seekers threw rocks and burnt tents to the ground on Thursday night after police used tear gas to stop them breaking out of the Christmas Island immigration detention centre.
An extra 70 police are on their way to the island, bolstering the force to 188, although the government yesterday ruled out bringing in the military. The situation at the remote centre, which houses 2398 asylum seekers, is tense.
