Cardwell Range money well spent, but . . .

Townsville Bulletin - - Voice Of The North -

I AGREE with Main Roads Minister, Craig Wallace ( TB March 15) that the upgrade of the Bruce Highway over the Cardwell Range is an extremely important project for North Queensland. The Cardwell Range crossing is in my electorate and I lobbied the State and Federal Governments hard for this project.

The current Cardwell Range crossing is very dangerous, especially in our regular wet weather. Numerous accidents ( many fatal) and landslides regularly close the Bruce Highway on the Cardwell Range, severing this vital road transport route for North Queensland. The current upgrade project will address these issues.

However, before Minister Wallace spends $ 200 million on an upgrade of the Bruce Highway at Cattle and Frances Creeks, he should talk to me and Herbert River district locals, who will tell him removing Hymenachne weed from Cattle Creek and excess sand from Frances Creek, will go a long way to addressing this problem.

With some common sense from DERM, we could mitigate the flooding on the Bruce Highway at Cattle and Frances Creeks for much less than $ 200 million.

ANDREW CRIPPS MP, Member for Hinchinbrook.
