Young Cowboys keen to bounce back
COWBOYS under-20s halfback and first-grade fivee i g ht h a s p i r a nt Michael Morgan has already tasted one too many heavy defeats this season.
The NYC Cowboys suffered an upset 46-24 defeat at the h a n d s o f t h e B r i s b a n e Broncos last week and it was a result Morgan doesn’t want to experience for the rest of season 2011.
‘‘ I think they ( Brisbane) just played too fast for us, we weren’t slowing them down in the ruck and not getting line speed,’’ Morgan said.
‘‘ It all built up and it just snowballed, it was our firstup contact that stuffed it for us, I think.
‘‘ There were good patches, but we were not good enough at the start.
‘‘ We’ll just try and stay positive after last week and try not to think about that too much.’’
Which is why Morgan and his team have been training to return their game to full strength for tonight’s Toyota Cup clash with Newcastle.
‘‘ At least we know this week that we can’t just go out there and expect it to happen, we have to play for it and p l a y f o r o n e a n o t h e r , ’ ’ Morgan said.
‘‘ We tried to fix up what we struggled with last Friday, i t ’ s been hard with t he weather but still we had to work around it.
‘‘ They’ve ( Newcastle) got a strong left edge, a lot of their attack goes out there but it’s nothing we can’t handle.’’
19-year-old Brothers junior Morgan i s c o ns i d e r e d a serious prospect of playing a l o n g s i d e J o h n a t h a n Thurston in first-grade this year, but it’s the mission at hand that he has his mind firmly fixed on.
‘‘ That’s always the goal but at the end of day while I’m in the under-20s team I have to do the best for them, I have to be 100 per cent willing for the team,’’ Morgan said.
Cowboys coach Kristian Woolf said the team would need to steel themselves for a better opening 20 minutes t han t hey produced l ast week.
‘ ‘ The Broncos probably played more enthusiastically than us, they were really aggressive,’’ Woolf said.
‘‘ Across the board we need to step up, but it’s a good opportunity for us to turn things around.’’
