Ibuprofen health alert

Townsville Bulletin - - News -

DOCTORS have warned of a potentially fatal condition linked to a common pain killer which can be triggered, in rare cases, by even a standard dose. Renal tubular acidosis ( RTA) can lead to dangerously low levels of potassium in the blood, causing abnormal heart rhythms. It also causes the breakdown of muscle as well as fatigue and paralysis. Researchers from hospitals in Perth and Sydney reviewed the cases of four patients. The patients presented to the emergency department at the hospitals with these symptoms, and who were found to be routine users of pain killers containing ibuprofen.
