Prison label backtrack

Townsville Bulletin - - The Goss -

ACTOR Paul Giamatti has apologised after comparing the city of Detroit to ‘‘ prison’’.

During an interview on Live! With Regis And Kelly, the Sideways actor explained that his absence from a recent Canadian awards ceremony was due to the fact that he was shooting the upcoming film Ides Of March with George Clooney in the Motor City.

‘‘ I couldn’t go because I was shooting a movie in Detroit, which is like being in prison, so I couldn’t get out,’’ he said.

Giamatti immediately recognised the gaffe and backtracked later in the interview, offering an apology.

‘‘ The job I was doing was like prison, not the city," he clarified.

In an email to the Detroit Free Press, a Giamatti spokeswoman said that he enjoyed his time in the city.
