Xmas Island detainees relocated
ARMED federal police in riot gear have beg un relocating d e - tainees within the Christmas Island detention centre following recent riots.
From a hill overlooking the centre teams of officers in riot gear, backed up by armoured Land Cruisers and a police dog, could be seen entering detention blocks yesterday morning and escorting some detainees to other parts of the centre.
Detainees stood and watched through the wire mesh walls of their compounds.
Outside the centre, Detective Superintendent Chris Lines of the Australian Federal Police said police, the contracted operator of the centre, Serco, and the Immigration Department were processing the detainees and ‘‘ redirecting them to their assigned areas’’.
‘‘ At this stage, all detainees have been compliant in the process this morning.’’
Det Supt Lines said the electric fence around the centre had been activated since Friday evening as a result of the disturbances last week and detainees had been informed of this.
He declined to confirm an immigration official statement at a community meeting on yesterday morning that all detainees had been accounted for and were back inside the centre.
‘ ‘ Until an official head count is concluded, it is premature for me to comment on any active search plans for detainees.’’
