Xmas Is­land de­tainees re­lo­cated

ARMED fed­eral po­lice in riot gear have beg un re­lo­cat­ing d e - tainees within the Christ­mas Is­land de­ten­tion cen­tre fol­low­ing re­cent ri­ots.

From a hill over­look­ing the cen­tre teams of of­fi­cers in riot gear, backed up by ar­moured Land Cruis­ers and a po­lice dog, could be seen en­ter­ing de­ten­tion blocks yes­ter­day morn­ing and es­cort­ing some de­tainees to other parts of the cen­tre.

De­tainees stood and watched through the wire mesh walls of their com­pounds.

Out­side the cen­tre, De­tec­tive Su­per­in­ten­dent Chris Lines of the Aus­tralian Fed­eral Po­lice said po­lice, the con­tracted op­er­a­tor of the cen­tre, Serco, and the Im­mi­gra­tion Depart­ment were pro­cess­ing the de­tainees and ‘‘ redi­rect­ing them to their as­signed ar­eas’’.

‘‘ At this stage, all de­tainees have been com­pli­ant in the process this morn­ing.’’

Det Supt Lines said the elec­tric fence around the cen­tre had been ac­ti­vated since Fri­day evening as a re­sult of the dis­tur­bances last week and de­tainees had been in­formed of this.

He de­clined to con­firm an im­mi­gra­tion of­fi­cial state­ment at a com­mu­nity meet­ing on yes­ter­day morn­ing that all de­tainees had been ac­counted for and were back in­side the cen­tre.

‘ ‘ Un­til an of­fi­cial head count is con­cluded, it is pre­ma­ture for me to com­ment on any ac­tive search plans for de­tainees.’’
