Film­ing kicks off on The Hob­bit

AN ac­tors’ boy­cott, stu­dio fund­ing prob­lems and a stom­ach ul­cer all threat­ened to de­rail it, but af­ter many de­lays The Hob­bit di­rec­tor Sir Peter Jack­son has yelled ‘‘ lights, cam­era, ac­tion!’’

Film­ing for the pre­quel to the Lord of the Rings tril­ogy fi­nally kicked off yes­ter­day af­ter months of legal and fi­nan­cial wran­gling. The $ 50.44 mil- lion two-film pro­duc­tion has been dogged with prob­lems, the most se­ri­ous be­ing a spat be­tween Jack­son and the coun­try’s ac­tors’ union.

The New Zealand gov­ern­ment in­ter­vened in late 2010 with a set of con­ces­sions to film­mak­ers Warner Bros, in­clud­ing a change to labour laws clar­i­fy­ing the sta­tus of film work­ers as con­trac­tors.
