Filming kicks off on The Hobbit
AN actors’ boycott, studio funding problems and a stomach ulcer all threatened to derail it, but after many delays The Hobbit director Sir Peter Jackson has yelled ‘‘ lights, camera, action!’’
Filming for the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy finally kicked off yesterday after months of legal and financial wrangling. The $ 50.44 mil- lion two-film production has been dogged with problems, the most serious being a spat between Jackson and the country’s actors’ union.
The New Zealand government intervened in late 2010 with a set of concessions to filmmakers Warner Bros, including a change to labour laws clarifying the status of film workers as contractors.
