Stoner crows: Aussie off to win­ning start

AUS­TRALIA’S Casey Stoner swept to vic­tory in yes­ter­day’s Mo­toGP sea­son-opener in Qatar. The 2007 world cham­pion gave Honda their first open­ing-round vic­tory in eight years af­ter he had dom­i­nated prac­tice and qual­i­fy­ing.

The Aus­tralian cruised to the line 3.440 sec­onds ahead of Yamaha’s reign­ing world cham­pion Jorge Lorenzo, with Honda team­mate Dani Pe­drosa third.

Mul­ti­ple world cham­pion Valentino Rossi started his Du­cati ca­reer with sev­enth place as he con­tin­ues to re­cover from shoul­der surgery last Novem­ber.

France’s Randy de Pu­niet crashed his Du­cati on the first lap and reign­ing Moto2 cham­pion Toni Elias of Spain, who has stepped up to Mo­toGP, crashed out.
