New delay in Brunker case
THE hearing of an alleged assault case involving Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Mike Brunker has been adjourned a fourth time after Bowen Magistrate Athol Kennedy disqualified himself from the matter. Magistrate Kennedy has reportedly made the decision to be removed due to a conflict of interest as he is said to know Mr Brunker, the alleged victim. Bowen Racing Club president Cyril Vains was listed to appear on a charge of common assault at Bowen Magistrates Court yesterday. The Townsville Bulletin understands the magistrate adjourned the matter to get a replacement magistrate from Townsville or Mackay. Mr Vains had earlier attempted to remove Magistrate Kennedy and the Bowenbased police prosecutor, Sgt Dave Blundell, from the case after alleging a possible bias. No date for the matter has been set.
