TOWNSVILLE City Council has rejected plans for a gated community at Radical Bay due to erosion concerns.

Councillor Vern Veitch said after three years of ass e s s ment , t h e a r e a was deemed unsafe for future development.

‘‘ It’s very important that we don’t put people in harm’s way,’’ he said.

‘‘ We have to expect that there is climate change occurring, resulting in sea level change.

‘‘ We can no longer accept taking risks that we perhaps didn’t know about in 2000 when t he f i nal data f or e r o s i o n o n Radical Bay Beach was documented.’’

Sunshine Coast-based Juniper Property Holdings now has t he r i ght t o appeal against the council’s decision.

Cr Veitch said the recent tidal surges proved the gated c o mmunity d e v e l o p ment would be risky.

‘‘ There’s been two 4.6m tides, one in January 2009 and February 2011, we can’t ignore those events,’’ he said.

‘‘ They’ve resulted in a significant amount of coastal erosion.

‘‘ We have to make sure we don’t put properties, human lives or infrastructure at risk.’’
