Saints produce heavenly start against Runaways in Premier League

Townsville Bulletin - - Sport -

SAINTS kicked off the new Townsville Premier League netball season the same way they finished off 2010, beating Runaways on Monday night.

In a replay of last season’s decider, Saints ran away 48-30 winners.

They led from start to finish, winning the first term 11-9 before power- ing away in the last three quarters to seal the 18-point victory.

Saints coach Patti Nahrung said it was a result that had bolstered the squad’s confidence.

‘‘ We didn’t play to our potential in the grading games so to come back and produce how they normally play was really good,’’ she said.

Despite the comfortable margin, Runaways provided Saints, who have a strong contingent of Magnetic North Steelcats, with a tough battle.

‘‘ Our shooting percentage was low and we seemed flat all the way down the court,’’ Runaways coach Julie Marty said. ‘‘ But we definitely can’t take anything away from Saints they played some nice netball.’’

In other results, Highlanders defeated Vixens ( 2) 48-30, Centen Hotel Vixens beat Burdekin 37-33 and Runaways White proved too good for Saints Sirens, winning 49-27.
