Segeyaro to make NRL debut
JAMES Segeyaro was one happy little rake yesterday after being named to make his NRL debut for the Cowboys this Monday night.
The Cairns Ivanhoes junior will make his first appearance in top-flight footy in a Cowboys team also featuring Kalifa Fai Fai Loa after coach Neil Henry posted Michael Bani a nd Ben Jones on Queensland Cup duties this weekend.
Although Segeyaro was put under wraps and not available for an interview yesterday, Henry said the 20-year-old debutant was ‘‘ extremely happy’’ on receiving the good news he’ll be playing against the Melbourne Storm at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Monday.
Segeyaro, who is on the comeback from off-season shoulder surgery, has been named on the bench for the round three game and will back-up Aaron Payne at hooker while Fai Fai Loa starts on the wing.
Henry said Bani could fight his way back into the first grade team, as with Jones, who the Cowboys mentor said would be granted more game time in his service for the Mackay Cutters.
‘‘ He ( Jones) got a try but he was a little bit limited with his running game. In fact that was his only run for the game, but he’ll get a bit more game time go- ing back to play in the Queensland Cup as well,’’ Henry said. ‘‘ We need to get him back and hopefully playing close to 80 minutes of football.’’
And Bani returns to the Northern Pride on the back of a game even Bani himself rated not the best of performances, Henry said.
‘‘ Michael’s determined to go back and he’ll play for the ( Northern) Pride this weekend and put in a good performance and see if he can push his way back into first grade,’’ he said.
As for two young young men making their way into first grade, Henry said Segeyaro and Fai Fai Loa would make the most of their chances.
‘‘ Kalifa had some good trial form and he also played well on the weekend down in Rockhampton and he gets his opportunity,’’ he said.
‘‘ He’s an enthusiastic young player who had two first-grade games for St George last year."
